A moderately strong earthquake initially measuring 5.4-magnitude on the Richter scale rattled parts of Metro Manila and nearby areas in Luzon on Tuesday (April 4) evening.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake was recorded at around 8:58 p.m. Tuesday, which originated at 7 kilometers northwest of Tingloy, Batangas.
Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey measured the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.2, which originated 5 kilometers west of Ilijan, Philippines.
Phivolcs said Intensity 4 was recorded in Makati City and Obando in Bulacan. An intensity 4 quake is felt generally by people indoors and some people outdoors.
Intensity 3, which is a weak tremor but can be felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings was recorded Mandaluyong City, Quezon City, Gen. Trias and Dasmarinas in Cavite, Santa Ana in Manila, and Lucena City in Quezon Province.
Intensity 2, which is slightly felt by some people, was reported in Talisay, Batangas and Pasig City.
Aftershocks measuring 4.6-magnitude and 2.5-magnitude were documented at 9:11 p.m. and 9:17 p.m, respectively.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin meaning the ground shaking was primarily due to the sudden movement in the earth’s plates.
So far, it said there was no reported damage to property or loss of lives due to the earthquake. However, aftershocks are expected to occur.
