Pacquiao to Run for President, Reveals Bob Arum

Manny Pacquiao is running for president in 2022, according to his boxing promoter Bob Arum. In an streamed conversation with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, Arum said he had been in a Zoon conference with Pacquiao in which the boxer asked him to attend his inauguration.

“I did a Zoom telephone call with him, ‘Bob, I’m gonna run in 2022 and, when I win, I want you there at my inauguration.'”

Pacquiao’s political career began in 2007 when he ran and lost to Darlene Custodio as representative of South Cotabato’s First District. He was soundly defeated by the incumbent, who garnered 139,061 votes to Pacquiao’s 75,908. The loss forced Pacquiao to relocate his base to Sarangani, where he was eventually elected as representative in 2010.

Duterte Anoints Pacquiao as the Next President
In 2017, President Duterte famously joked at the 39th birthday celebration of the boxer that he would become the next president of the Philippines.

“I told him while we were alone, I want you to become president,” said Duterte.

“The determination you have shown and the humility embodied in the glorious triumph are worthy of emulation. Continue to inspire as we lead them towards a more prosperous life,” he added.

But in November 2019, Duterte advised the boxer to think things over if he intends to run or president in 2022.

“Politicians should think about [running for president] carefully. Manny, I think Manny is entertaining, well it’s good… Getting tired is the only thing you get from this work,” said Duterte.

Pacquiao has yet to comment on Arum’s revelation that he is running for president in 2022.
