Florida recorded more than 15,000 new cases of coronavirus in one day, setting a new record for a state in the country by breaking the mark previously set by California, according to official figures released Sunday.
The Florida Department of Health reported a total of 15,299 cases in this southeastern US state, which represented a 47% increase over the previous day’s record. Florida also recorded 45 deaths in 24 hours from covid-19.
Thus, in five days, Florida has registered 55,842 new cases.
The previous record for one-day infections was from California, with a count of 11,694 last Wednesday. Previously, the highest mark was from New York, with 11,571 cases reported on April 14.
Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis pushed for the reopening on May 4, earlier than other states in the country.
In unusual direct criticism, White House chief adviser on the pandemic Anthony Fauci said Thursday that that southern state moved ahead with misconductment before public health indicators were adequate to proceed.
DeSantis rejected those sayings, justifying the decision made on the data at that time.
In late June, DeSantis backed off, ordering the closure of bars to slow the spread of the disease. But the number of infections continued to increase.
The Florida governor has declined to demand the wearing of masks in public – a step other governors of the south have taken – saying it was a matter for local officials to decide.
