Comelec to proclaim winning senators two weeks after the May 13 polls

The Commission on Elections expects to proclaim the winning senators in the midterm polls within two weeks after the May 13 polls.

“We already have a tentative date for the proclamation of senators. We will announce it as we get closer, but it’s roughly within two weeks from voting,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a press briefing Tuesday.

Asked if they are planning to proclaim the 12 winning senators all at the same time, he answered affirmatively.

“In 2016, what we did was we proclaimed all 12 , I think that’s what were going for now,” said Jimenez.

As for the proclamation of local candidates, he said they expect this will take place within 24 to 36 hours.

“Proclamation in the local level is expected very quickly. At the very lowest level it is expected to happen within 24 to 36 hours. A little higher than that, up to about 72 hours,” said Jimenez.

During the 2016 polls, the Comelec was able to proclaim all the winners for senator at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City nearly two weeks after the conduct of the polls.

It also proclaimed the winning partylist representatives.

To note, there are 43,554 candidates in the midterm polls.

Sixty two are running for senator, 633 for member of the House of Representatives, 273 for governor, 185 for vice governor; 1,733 for provincial board members; 3,986 for mayor; 3,618 for vice mayor and 33,064 for councilor 33,064.

There are also 134 partylist groups in the upcoming polls.
